Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 Pound Flank Steak, cut into bite-sized pieces

Vegetables

  • 4 Cups Broccoli Florets, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 Cloves Garlic, mashed
  • 2 Green Onions, sliced thin (both whites and greens)

Sauces & Liquids

  • 3/4 Cup Beef or Chicken Broth
  • 1/4 Cup Hoisin Sauce
  • 1/4 Cup Low Sodium Soy Sauce or Coconut Aminos
  • 1 Tablespoon Rice Vinegar
  • 1/4 Cup Water

Oils

  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil or Avocado Oil (divided)
  • 2 Teaspoons Avocado Oil

Thickening Agent & Seasonings

  • 2 Tablespoons Arrowroot Starch or Tapioca Flour or Corn Starch
  • 2 Teaspoons Ground Ginger
  • 1 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare Steak: Chop the flank steak into bite-sized pieces by cutting against the grain to ensure tenderness and juiciness. Set aside.
  2. Prepare Broccoli: Wash the broccoli florets thoroughly and chop them into small, bite-sized pieces for even cooking.
  3. Prepare Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the beef or chicken broth, hoisin sauce, low sodium soy sauce or coconut aminos, rice vinegar, water, avocado oil, arrowroot starch, ground ginger, and ground black pepper. Whisk thoroughly until the sauce is smooth and fully combined. Set aside.
  4. Heat Pan: Place a large pan or skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive or avocado oil, allowing it to heat up.
  5. Cook Steak: Once the oil is hot, add the steak pieces to the pan. Sauté them for about 4 minutes until mostly cooked through with a slight pink center for tenderness.
  6. Remove Steak: Transfer the cooked steak to a plate and set aside to keep warm.
  7. Cook Vegetables: Add another tablespoon of oil to the pan. Then add broccoli, mashed garlic, sliced green onions, and water. Stir well and cook for 2-3 minutes until the broccoli starts to become tender yet still crisp.
  8. Add Beef and Sauce: Return the cooked steak to the pan with the vegetables. Pour the prepared sauce over the mixture and stir thoroughly to coat all pieces evenly.
  9. Cook Sauce: Allow the beef and broccoli to simmer together in the sauce for 5-6 minutes, letting the sauce thicken and flavors meld. Then turn off the heat.
  10. Taste and Adjust: Sample the dish and adjust seasonings to preference, adding more pepper or soy sauce if needed.
  11. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the saucy beef and broccoli hot over cooked rice for a quick and satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Cutting the steak against the grain ensures a more tender bite.
  • You can substitute coconut aminos for soy sauce for a gluten-free or paleo-friendly version.
  • If sauce thickening is too thin, simmer longer or add a touch more arrowroot starch mixed with water.
  • Serve with steamed jasmine or brown rice for a wholesome meal.
  • This dish reheats well and makes excellent leftovers for lunch the next day.
