Ingredients

Meat & Sauce

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1 large white onion, finely diced

Noodles

  • 1 (8 ounce) package egg noodles

Cheese Mixture

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, or more to taste

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook the ground beef, stirring occasionally, until browned and crumbly, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and discard excess grease.
  2. Prepare the sauce: Stir the tomato sauce, white sugar, garlic salt, and salt into the browned beef. Reduce heat and let simmer for about 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend. Remove skillet from heat and cover to keep warm.
  3. Cook the noodles: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the egg noodles and cook until tender but firm to the bite, about 7 to 9 minutes. Drain well.
  4. Preheat the oven and prepare the casserole dish: While the noodles cook, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish thoroughly.
  5. Make the creamy mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, softened cream cheese, and finely diced onion until smooth and well incorporated.
  6. Assemble the casserole: Layer half of the cooked egg noodles evenly in the prepared casserole dish. Spread half of the sour cream mixture over the noodles, followed by half of the ground beef mixture. Repeat the layers with the remaining noodles, sour cream mixture, and beef.
  7. Add cheese topping: Sprinkle the shredded sharp Cheddar cheese evenly over the top layer of the casserole.
  8. Bake to finish: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown on top.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of cheese and sour cream to suit your taste or based on what you have available – the casserole will still be delicious.
  • Adding the diced onion raw in the cheese mixture gives a fresh bite, but you may also sauté the onion with the beef for a softer texture.
  • Drain the ground beef fat thoroughly to reduce grease in the casserole.
  • Serve hot with a side salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
