Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 package frozen puff pastry (2 sheets, thawed)
  • ½ cup fruit jam or preserves (any flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 egg (beaten)

Glaze

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk or cream
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare Pastry Base: Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets and cut each into six equal rectangles. Arrange half of these rectangles on the prepared baking sheet as the base for the strudels.
  3. Mix Jam Filling: In a small bowl, combine the fruit jam with cornstarch to thicken the filling slightly. Spoon about a tablespoon of this mixture onto the center of each pastry rectangle, leaving a border around the edges.
  4. Seal Pastries: Lightly brush the edges of each rectangle with beaten egg to help seal. Then place another pastry rectangle on top of each filled base. Press the edges firmly with a fork to seal and poke small holes on the top to allow steam to escape during baking.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the pastries with more beaten egg to give them a beautiful golden color once baked.
  6. Bake: Bake the pastries for 18–20 minutes, or until they are puffed and golden brown, indicating they are fully cooked and flaky.
  7. Prepare Glaze: While the pastries cool slightly, whisk together powdered sugar, milk (or cream), and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth and pourable.
  8. Glaze and Serve: Drizzle the vanilla glaze over the warm pastries just before serving for that classic sweet finish.

Notes

  • You can customize the filling with any fruit jam or preserves you prefer.
  • If you want a thicker glaze, use less milk or powdered sugar to adjust the consistency.
  • Make sure to poke holes in the top pastry layer to prevent puffing unevenly or bursting.
  • Use cold butter puff pastry for the best flaky texture.
  • These pastries are best enjoyed warm but can be stored in an airtight container and reheated gently.
