Ingredients

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Dough

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Oil for frying (enough for 2-1/2 inches deep in fryer)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar Mixture: In a medium bowl or a brown paper bag, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Set this mixture aside for coating the churro poppers after frying.
  2. Heat Oil: Pour enough oil into a deep fryer or a deep, heavy-bottomed pot to reach about 2-1/2 inches deep. Heat the oil to 375°F (190°C) to ensure the dough balls fry up crispy and golden.
  3. Make Dough: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup water, 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, then remove from heat. Stir in 1 cup all-purpose flour vigorously until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the saucepan.
  4. Shape Dough Balls: Allow the dough to cool enough to handle safely. Then scoop and lightly roll the dough into walnut-sized balls, making sure they are smooth and compact.
  5. Fry the Dough Balls: Carefully drop 3 to 4 dough balls into the hot oil without overcrowding. Fry them until they turn golden brown, about 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally for even cooking.
  6. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: Remove the fried dough balls using a slotted spoon and immediately place them into the reserved cinnamon-sugar mixture. Toss or shake to coat thoroughly while still warm.
  7. Serve: Transfer the coated churro poppers to a plate and serve immediately to enjoy their warm, crispy texture.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil temperature stays consistent at 375°F to prevent greasy or undercooked poppers.
  • Do not overcrowd the frying pan to maintain oil temperature and ensure even cooking.
  • You can keep fried poppers warm in a low oven (about 200°F) for a few minutes if making in batches.
  • For variation, sprinkle extra cinnamon sugar just before serving for a stronger cinnamon flavor.
