Ingredients

Churros

  • 1 cup (120g) all purpose flour
  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Chocolate Dipping Sauce

  • 1 cup (170g) semi sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: In a deep pan, heat 4 cups of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a plate lined with paper towels for draining the fried churros.
  2. Make the dough: In a saucepan, combine 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, then remove from heat. Stir in 1 cup flour vigorously until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Incorporate egg: Let the dough cool slightly to avoid cooking the egg. Beat in 1 large egg until the dough is smooth and fully incorporated.
  4. Pipe the churros: Transfer the dough into a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe 4 to 5-inch long strips of dough directly into the hot oil, cutting the ends carefully with scissors or a knife.
  5. Fry until golden: Fry the churros for 2 to 3 minutes per side until they turn golden brown and become crisp. Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain on the paper towels.
  6. Coat with cinnamon sugar: Mix 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon in a shallow bowl. While warm, roll the fried churros in this cinnamon sugar mixture to coat evenly.
  7. Prepare chocolate sauce: Warm 1/2 cup heavy cream until hot but not boiling. Pour over 1 cup chopped semi sweet chocolate and stir gently until smooth and creamy to create the dipping sauce.
  8. Serve: Arrange churros on a serving plate and serve immediately with the warm chocolate dipping sauce for a delicious treat.

Notes

  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F for even frying and crisp texture.
  • If the dough is too thick to pipe, add a teaspoon of water at a time to loosen.
  • Use a star-shaped piping tip to get the traditional churro ridges that hold the cinnamon sugar better.
  • Serve churros immediately after frying for best crispness.
  • The chocolate sauce can be kept warm by placing the bowl over a pot of simmering water.
  • Leftover churros are best reheated in a hot oven to regain crispness rather than microwaving.
